From April 2013, local authorities have been responsible for public health locally, including commissioning public health services for school aged children in their area. This includes school nursing services.

Local authorities should assess the health needs of their populations and commission the appropriate school nursing services. Local authorities will determine the school nursing numbers depending on need. This will be underpinned by robust workforce plans.
