Once established, Great British Railways (GBR) will bring forward costed options to decarbonise the rail network to meet the government’s commitment to a net-zero society as part of the 30-year strategy.

GBR will also introduce a number of passenger-focused reforms designed to encourage greater use of the railways and fulfil its role as a public service that supports achieving net zero across the whole economy and transport system. This includes the introduction of better value, simpler fares; expansion of modern payment methods; and new passenger service contracts with incentives for private sector providers to run high-quality and punctual services.
