Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what discussions he has had with the Royal Colleges on the potential merits of the use of statins to treat Alzheimer's disease.

There have been no recent discussions between the Department and the Royal Colleges on the potential merits of the use of statins to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

The responsibility for prescribing rests with the doctor or prescriber who has clinical responsibility for a particular aspect of a patient's care. Decisions on which drugs are prescribed should be based on clinical assessments made in line with the relevant guidelines and should take account of the individual clinical needs of patients.
