Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, pursuant to the Answer of 10 January 2017 to Question 57722, how many applications to extract information from the National Pupil Database were accepted in each of the last five years.

The data in the National Pupil Database helps give us a clear picture of how the school system is working. The Department takes privacy extremely seriously and access to sensitive data is strictly controlled. Allowing vetted researchers and academics access to excerpts of this data, in an anonymised format and under strictly controlled conditions, can help the development and improvement of our education system for the benefit of all.

The applications accepted to extract information from the National Pupil Database over the past 5 years are detailed in the table below. These include both the Department’s and external requests.
