Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to the Answer of 17 October 2016 to Question 47387, what the evidential basis is for the statement that there has been no material deterioration in quality and safety standards within primary care in the last five years.

The latest available independent evidence about the standards of quality and safety in primary care is from the recently published Care Quality Commission State of Care Report, which states:

“The majority of GP practices are providing good quality care and leading the change in service design. The majority of GP practices provide a good quality of care to their patients. We have rated 83% of practices as good and a further 4% as outstanding. Where we have re-inspected, three-quarters of practices (153 out of 203) that needed to improve have done so.”
