Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, when he plans to make available on the NHS knee injection treatment to replace knee surgery.

The best treatment for knee pain will vary depending on the individual and their underlying problem. Patients considering a knee operation should also be given information about alternative treatments such as physiotherapy. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published clinical guidance on the care and management of osteoarthritis, including knee surgery at:

Clinical commissioning groups are responsible for commissioning services to meet the requirements of their local population. It would be for them to decide whether this procedure should be made available, taking into account any available evidence of its clinical and cost effectiveness.
