Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, with reference to the Answers of 25 January 2016 to Question 22862 and of 26 June 2015 to Question 2890, for what reasons additional days were added as a result of adjudications to sentences served by children under the age of 18 in each year since 2010.
The table below provides the reasons additional days were added as a result of adjudications to sentences served by children under the age of 18 in each year since 2010.
Although youth crime is down, reoffending rates are far too high and the care and supervision of young offenders in custody is not good enough.
That is why the Justice Secretary has asked Charlie Taylor to conduct a review of youth justice. He will report back later this year with recommendations on how to improve the treatment of young people in our care.
I also plan to appoint a Youth Custody Improvement Board who will work across the youth secure estate in each Secure Training Centre and Young Offender Institution that holds children, including those currently run by NOMS and will look particularly at the safety of young people and behaviour management techniques.
