The National Maternity Review, Better Births, published earlier this year, set out wide-ranging proposals designed to make care safer and give women greater control and more choices.

NHS England is designing a programme to implement the recommendations made in the review. The implementation programme will be led jointly by partners across the system, including NHS Improvement and the Department. The programme will focus on enabling, encouraging and incentivising local health economies to implement the vision set out in the review, taking account of local opportunities and challenges. As the review sets out, local transformation will be supported by national NHS organisations.

Sarah-Jane Marsh, Chief Executive of Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Women’s Hospital, has been appointed chair of the NHS England Maternity Transformation Programme Board. The Maternity Transformation Programme Board will drive forward the implementation of the Maternity Review, including work to reduce the rate of stillbirths, neonatal and maternal deaths in England.
