Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what discussions he has had with Cabinet colleagues on the potential merits holding a debate on UK support for the war in Yemen.

The Government is deeply concerned by the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen. We fully support the peace process led by the UN Special Envoy, Martin Griffiths, and urge the parties to engage constructively with this process. A political settlement is the only way to bring long-term stability to Yemen and to address the worsening humanitarian crisis.

The UK supports the Saudi-led Coalition military intervention, accepted by the UN Security Council, which came at the request of legitimate President Hadi who was forced to flee Sana’a following a rebel insurgency which took the capital by force and overthrew the legitimate Government of Yemen, as recognised by the international community. Saudi Arabia and its allies are responding to a crisis that was forced on them and that poses a grave threat to international peace and security.
