Immediately after exit, EU citizens can continue to cross the border using their passport or national identity card. They will be able to use e-Gates if they are travelling on a biometric passport, and they will not be routinely questioned about their status in the UK.

During 2020, the UK will phase out the use of EEA national identity cards. We will make an announcement on when this will happen and will give notice so that EU citizens and carriers can prepare. Swiss national identity cards will continue to be valid for travel in line with the citizens’ rights agreement between the UK and Switzerland.
