Mental health is a priority for this government, which is why we continue to work closely with the sector on issues including the disclosure of students’ mental health concerns to their families.

We have asked Universities UK (UUK) to explore an opt-in requirement for higher education providers, which would give providers permission to share information on a student’s mental health with a trusted person. UUK are developing an information sharing consensus and guidance for the sector, which will be launched later this year. This work has been informed by consultation with students and the sector and will seek to balance ensuring students, as young adults, are at the centre of any decisions made about their care with giving students every possible opportunity to choose to receive support from families and trusted friends.
