Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what estimate he has made of the number of people in the UK who will be directly affected by the end of the mutual recognition of professional qualifications in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

This question was answered on 7th February 2019

The Department has laid draft legislation before Parliament (the draft Recognition of Professional Qualifications (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019) to ensure that in the event of the UK exiting the EU without a withdrawal agreement, the system for the recognition of EEA and Swiss professional qualifications in the UK will continue to function effectively; and that existing recognition decisions for EEA and Swiss professionals within scope of this legislation (approximately 38,000 decisions) will remain valid. In addition, the European Commission has published guidance which confirms that decisions made before exit day will not be affected by the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, but that post-exit, UK professionals will be subject to host state rules.
