Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what support the UK is providing to the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
HMG Officials and Ministers have maintained a regular dialogue with all sides of the constitutional reform debate in Hong Kong. I have met with members of the Central People’s Government, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions (SAR) Government, and with two Hong Kong democracy advocates during their visit to London in July. They also met separately with the Deputy Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the member for Sheffield Hallam (Mr Clegg).
As I noted in my Written Ministerial Statement to Parliament on 13 October, and in my response to a Westminster Hall debate on 22 October, the Government continues to encourage all parties to engage in dialogue and to work towards a consensus that allows a significant step forward for democracy in Hong Kong. The Government has consistently called on all sides to ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful.
