Defra has not directly commissioned research on the levels of resistance of crops to protective chemicals sprayed on them by farmers because the Health and Safety Executive carries out an assessment of the impact of pesticide products on target and non-target plants. We can be confident in this work because under the European Union regulatory regime for pesticides, the Health and Safety Executive, as the UK pesticides regulator, assesses and authorises pesticide products for specific uses following comprehensive evaluations of detailed applications for authorisation from pesticide manufacturers.
