Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, with reference to the commitment in the NHS Long Term Plan to consider the potential for a stronger role for the NHS in commissioning sexual health services, what the timeframe is for the (a) consultation on and (b) implementation of proposals for the commissioning of those services.

Responsibility for commissioning some sexual health services, including contraception, transferred from the NHS to local authorities in England in 2013. The Government recognises and appreciates the excellent work that authorities have done since then but after six years it is prudent to take stock of whether the system is delivering as effectively as it needs to in providing integrated services. We will work with stakeholders to make sure we take relevant evidence into account before reaching any conclusions. We will publish the outcome of our considerations later this year and consult as necessary on specific proposals for change.
