The Government is committed to making sure we have high data protection standards. Under the UK’s data protection regime, organisations have obligations to ensure that the personal data of individuals are processed fairly, lawfully and transparently. This includes ensuring that only the required data is collected, that it is processed for a clear purpose and not kept for longer than is necessary. Individuals have the right to be kept informed of the collection and processing of their data and can also seek to access, erase or rectify their data or to object to its processing.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the independent body responsible for regulating and enforcing the DPA. The ICO has issued guidance for organisations on how to comply with the legislation and have published resources to inform individuals of their rights. If individuals have concerns about how an organisation is processing their personal data, they can refer these to the ICO.
