The NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme aims to reduce deaths from AAA through early detection, and invites men registered with a general practitioner for ultrasound screening during the year they turn 65.

Since the NHS AAA Screening Programme was rolled out, it has screened more than 1.3 million men, detected more than 16,000 aneurysms and referred around 4,000 men for treatment.

A paper published in the British Journal of Surgery in 2016 looked at the impact of the NHS AAA Screening Programme in its first five years and its conclusion was that the processes in the programme are effective in detecting and treating men with AAA.
