Question to the Department for Education:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, whether she has had recent discussions with Cabinet colleagues on the potential merits of introducing 20mph speed limits outside schools.
The power to make speed limit orders setting enforceable local speed limits, including 20mph limits, rests with local traffic authorities. The 2016 update to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions enables traffic authorities to place advisory part-time 20mph speed limit signs in the vicinity of schools without the need for Government approval. There have therefore been no recent discussions between Cabinet colleagues on this issue.
