To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to the Answer of 21 May 2018 to Question 146957, and given that payment for medicines is not exempt from US sanctions, how UK entities will be able to sell medicine into Iran when payment cannot be made from Iranian to UK banks.

Payments for medical supplies are not subject to US sanctions. Whether to engage in transactions with Iran, including in sectors exempted from US sanctions – such as medical supplies – remains a commercial decision for individual banks. However, this Government encourages legitimate trade with Iran and continues to engage US and European counterparts to help facilitate this.
