Bed availability and occupancy is rightly managed at a local level. Nationally, the National Health Service planned earlier than ever before to cope with winter this year when we know demand for beds increases. This was supported by an additional £337 million which included funding to make sure additional beds were made available to patients during heightened seasonal demand.

Hospitals have a responsibility in ensuring that they are operating with the necessary beds available to support effective patient flow and safety.
