Developing and supporting teachers and leaders is fundamental to driving up educational standards in alternative provision (AP) and improving outcomes for children educated in these settings. On 16 March 2018, the Department launched a £4 million Alternative Provision Innovation Fund to support projects to develop effective practice across AP. The second round of the Teaching and Leadership Innovation Fund, launched in January 2018, also welcomed bids to support high-quality professional development for teachers and school leaders in AP.

Local authorities receive high needs funding to support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and to fund good quality AP, including in pupil referral units. High needs funding will rise to a total of £6 billion in 2018-19.
