Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what the average length of service is for an infantry soldier who enlists (a) aged over 18 years and (b) below 18 years old.


This question was answered on 27th February 2018

The average length of service for a soldier who enlists aged over 18 years old is nine years and nine months. The average for a soldier enlisting under 18 years old is 13 years and two months.

For an infantry soldier who enlists aged over 18 years old, the average length of service is eight years and two months. The average for an infantry soldier enlisting under 18 years old is 11 years and two months.

Notes:

The figures exclude Ghurkhas, Full Time Reserve Service and Mobilised Reserves. This also excludes any soldiers who do not complete Initial Trade Training.
