Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, whether the increased teaching hours on maths and English in primary and secondary schools has led to a reduction in teaching hours for music education.

Information on number of hours taught in each subject is derived from the School Workforce Census. Information is collected from state funded secondary schools only. Information is not collected from primary schools. The attached table shows the percentage of hours spent teaching English, mathematics and music in state funded secondary schools for the years 2010 to 2016.

It is not possible to estimate whether increases in teaching hours in one area of the curriculum have directly caused reductions elsewhere.
