I am concerned by reports of an attack in Plateau State and by reports of other recent fatal clashes between farmers and herdsmen. I condemn the recent attacks and loss of life. All parties need to find a peaceful solution to the complex underlying causes of these incidents.

Inter-communal clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria, over land, farming rights, grazing routes and access to water have a devastating impact on lives and communities. We emphasise the importance of protecting civilians, including ethnic and religious minorities, with the Nigerian authorities, at the highest level. We welcome President Buhari's commitment to focus on bringing the perpetrators of such attacks to justice and examining longer term peaceful solutions to the conflict.
