The explanatory framework, published in March 2020, was intended to inform adequacy discussions with the European Commission and we have no plans to update it. Data provisions in Free Trade Agreements, including the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), are separate but complementary to the UK's adequacy process and international data protection frameworks. Separately from the CEPA, the UK has preserved the effect of the EU's adequacy decision for Japan on a transitional basis.
