Following Royal Assent of the Housing and Planning Act 2016, a Working Group of relevant experts, including the Local Government Association, was established to provide recommendations to Ministers on what, if any, legislative requirements for electrical safety in the private rented sector should be introduced. The Working Group met four times, in August, October, November and December 2016. The working group has now concluded and Ministers are considering its report and recommendations.

A recent consultation by the Health and Safety Executive on The Gas Safety (Installations and Use) Regulations 1998 involved an assessment of the adequacy of landlords’ gas safety checks. This assessment and other evidence confirmed that the regulatory requirements for these checks are sufficient to ensure safety.
