Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment has been made of the effects of placing both parents names on a child's passport in the interests of helping border staff fulfil their duty to safeguard children; and if she will make a statement.

Adding a parent’s name to the passport at the time of issue would only reflect the parental information at the time the passport was issued and would not allow for any future changes.

It would not reduce the need for border staff to be satisfied with the current relationship between the child and the accompanying adult, as they have a statutory duty to protect children and may question any passenger in relation to that duty. This position will not change whether or not parental names are added.
