Gypsy and Traveller children are a recognised ethnic group, yet when they enter care their cultural identity is often ignored. Many are placed with carers who do not understand their traditions, values or way of life, which can lead to loss of identity and emotional harm. Cultural identity for all ethnic groups should be protected in care placements.
