Crime: South Tyneside
Monday 30th July 2018

Asked by: Stephen Hepburn (Independent - Jarrow)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment his Department has made of the reasons for the increase in the level of reported crime in South Tyneside between April 2017 and March 2018; and if he will make a statement.

Answered by Nick Hurd

Police recorded crime figures for England and Wales are published quarterly by the Home Office.

Total crime recorded (excluding fraud) in South Tyneside Community Service Partnership has increased by 21% in the year to March 2018 compared to year to March 2017.

Nationally total police recorded crime (including fraud) increased by 11% in the year ending March 2018 compared with the previous year. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) points to improvements to recording practices by forces, expanded offence coverage, an increased willingness of victims to come forward and report certain crimes like sexual offences and domestic abuse to the police and genuine increases in some crime categories, especially in those that are well recorded, as important factors in explaining trends in police recorded crime.

Overall crime (excluding fraud) measured by the independent Crime Survey for England and Wales are down by 35% since 2010.

The most recent national crime figures are published by the Office for National Statistic in ‘Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2018’ (https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2018).

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps he is taking to tackle metal theft in (a) Tyne and Wear, (b) North East England and (c) the UK.

Answered by Nick Hurd

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 provides the legislative basis for tackling metal theft across England and Wales by making it more difficult for criminals to dispose of stolen metal through scrap metal yards.

Enforcement of the Act is a matter for individual local authorities and for chief constables and Police and Crime Commissioners who must decide how best to deploy their resources to respond to the crimes affecting their local communities

Northumbria Police
Tuesday 24th October 2017

Asked by: Stephen Hepburn (Independent - Jarrow)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the effect of changes in police officer numbers employed by Northumbria Police on their effectiveness since 2010.

Answered by Nick Hurd

Northumbria Police have consistently been graded as “Good” on police effectiveness in Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services PEEL inspections (most recently published in March 2017).

Decisions about the number of officers and how they are deployed are a matter for PCCs and chief officers. I am, however, engaging with the sector to better understand the changing demands on the police and how these can best be managed, including what more can be done to improve productivity and efficiency and make prudent use of financial reserves.
