Written Question
Refugees: Ukraine
Monday 21st March 2022

Asked by: Lord Wigley (Plaid Cymru - Life peer)

Question to the Northern Ireland Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether refugees from Ukraine who have been given the right to remain in the Republic of Ireland are entitled to cross the border into Northern Ireland.

Answered by Lord Caine - Lord in Waiting (HM Household) (Whip)

The situation in Ukraine is a humanitarian crisis and the Government is taking concrete steps to provide sanctuary to those affected through the Ukraine Family Scheme. A new sponsorship route, which will allow Ukrainians with no family ties to the UK to be sponsored to come here, also launched this month.

Ukrainians in Ireland wishing to come to the UK should apply to do so before seeking to travel to the UK including travelling across the land border into Northern Ireland. The Government is using a variety of communications channels and working with a range of stakeholders to support Ukrainian nationals seeking safe passage to the United Kingdom, regardless of whether they are travelling across the CTA or from elsewhere in the world.
